As if snowboarding and kitesurfing
actually meshed into one single sport it
would be Snowkiting. Imagine taking a lift
high atop a beautiful mountain, you set your
kite in motion and get your feet firmly planted
you start your run down a long white hill.
As you snowboard down the mountain your kite
helps you gain speed and with a good gust
of wind you too can be 10 – 15 feet
in the air. With this much gravity you too
can be implementing the same moves as the
kitesurfer does including jibing and crossing
over.
George Bush won the election because
he was finally able to break out of the presidential
bubble and give “leadership talks” on
a consistent basis.
But to do it, he had to face the dark night
of his leadership soul. And this is a lesson
for ALL leaders.
The presidential bubble is that physical and
psychological insulation that descends upon
the president of the United States the moment
he’s sworn in.
Inside the bubble, people continually agree
with him. Inside the bubble, he can give canned
speeches in front of canned audiences – all
to his heart’s content — and think
he’s doing a great job as a communicator.
But the bubble ultimately is a blight, and
it almost destroyed the Bush presidency mainly
because it kept him from giving what I call
leadership talks.
Oh, how easy it is for us to slip
into “nice guy” mode! We have
a natural tendency to want to be nice guys
and even believe that this is exactly what
women want from us. As you probably know,
it’s not. Then, why do we do this?
Let me tell you a little story (I’ll
keep it short):
Many years ago, I got my pilot’s license.
During that time I learned a very important
lesson about flying: what you think is going
on (because of your senses) is NOT what you
ever want to use in actually flying a plane.
Take the situation where you’re flying “blind” such
as in clouds. Your body tells you constantly
that you’re banking (turning) when in
fact; your instruments say that you’re
flying straight and level. Add a little climb
to this and the effect is dramatically increased.
In order to be a successful pilot (that is,
to “live”) you have to get over
the overwhelming desire to react to what you
think you feel, and to rely in your instruments,
believe them, trust then and do what they tell
you to do.
Doc, I’ve read your book and I agree
with your principles. I salute you and I’m
very grateful for the knowledge you are imparting
to us guys.
Here’s my problem. You’ve written
that your techniques apply across the globe,
but I’m starting to think twice. I’m
a college student and live in the Philippines.
In this country we practice traditional Christian
courting. This has been ingrained in us since
1600 A.D. We call this mating dance “ligaw.” Women
here are half-traditional and half-liberated.
Normally in “ligaw” the man befriends
the girl first. It’s so useless. Worse,
it’s anti-Challenge.
If you are like most people you probably
used your credit card to ring up all those
gifts for loved ones. Although convenient in
their use, many people get stressed when they
receive their credit card bills in January
and realize they have the daunting task of
paying them off.
This is a time when credit card companies
may lower your monthly payment, to give you
the impression that they are helping you. However,
as the following article written by James H.
Dimmitt points out, this might not be a good
thing.
———-
If you opened a credit card statement recently
and were pleasantly surprised to find that
your minimum payment due was lowered, don’t
be so quick to “jump for joy”.
What may appear as a small boost to your monthly
budget is actually the rock that can weigh
you down in debt for a lifetime.
It has taken almost forty years for snowboarding
to be recognized as a major sport that is followed
and participated in by hundreds of thousands
of people worldwide. Humanity’s love
affair with snow has been documented throughout
the ages, starting with cave dwellers who were
smart enough to figure out that snow had its
advantages, such as serving as insulation to
hold in the warmth in their homes and preserving
the day’s kill.
To say who actually invented the sport of
snowboarding would be impossible because people
have always loved to slide down a snow-covered
hill. Soaring through the snow on some kind
of seat or board is nothing new. The ways to
enjoy the snow are numerous, and people have
devised ways to turn garbage can lids and cardboard
into “snow boards” to enjoy an
afternoon frolic outdoors. The various ways
to glide through snow have become more sophisticated
and have evolved into using polished boards
or skis in much the same manner as a surfboarder
would ride a wave.
